Using Essential Oils during your Pregnancy

I am often asked about what natural health products are safe during pregnancy, delivery, and recovery. So here are some options you can try.

I recommend that you use only 100% Pure Therapeutic/Tested Grade Oils. This way you get don’t get the synthetic product! Also with blends, you want to know about the carrier oil to make sure it is pure. See more precautions information at the end. And always if you are unsure if oil can be used, please refer it to your licensed medical practitioner.

During Pregnancy


  • Add drops to your water glass and sip throughout the day, it will be quite strong. Great as a tea.
  • Add 2 drops of Peppermint to about an ounce of almond milk for quick relief


  • Apply 3 to 5 drops of Peppermint, Ginger, or Fennel on your tummy or on the bottom of your feet. You may also find some relief simply by smelling the oils and diffusing them.

Lower Back & Leg Pain

  • Add 2 to three drops of Lavender or Ylang Ylang in a warm bath can help to ease pain in your muscles. Lavender can also stimulate contractions, so best to use only in your first trimester.
  • Apply deep blue oil or Geranium to the affected area using a carrier oil like fractionated coconut oil.

Morning Sickness

  • Add some Lavender, Sandalwood, or Ginger to fractionated coconut oil and rub onto your belly.
  • Make a veggie cap with 3 to 5 drops of Fennel, Ginger, or Peppermint.
  • Add 1 to 2 drops of Ginger and Lemon to your water with a natural sweetener like honey or stevia.
  • Put a drop of Peppermint under your tongue, rubbed on your tummy or the bottom of your feet.
  • Diffuse 3 drops of Grapefruit or Peppermint next to your bed.

Sleeplessness & Insomnia

  • Use the peace blend of Lavender on the bottom of your feet, you can also diffuse or spray your linens.

Swelling & Water Retention

  • Drink water with 3 to 5 drops of Grapefruit, Lemon, and/or Lime.
  • Add 3 to 5 drops of Geranium, Ginger, Lemon, and Lavender in a roller bottle with fractionated coconut oil and roll on ankles and feet a few times a day especially at the end of the day. Massage feet and ankles in an upward movement toward the heart.

Stretch Marks

  • Combine 4 drops of Helichrysum, Lavender, and Frankincense to the liquid from 6 Vitamin E capsules to an ounce of organic coconut oil in a small jar. Massage over tummy, breasts & thighs every morning and night in your second and third trimester.


  • Add 1 drop each of Cypress, Lavender, and Marjoram and 5 drops Geranium to 1 Tbs organic coconut oil and apply to the area with hemorrhoids or you can do this and then soak in a sitz bath.

Yeast Infections

  • Put a few drops of Melaleuca, Lavender & about 2 Tbs of bath salts into a warm bath and soak for about 10 minutes.

During Labour

Back Labor

  • Use a few drops of Peppermint or deep blue with some fractionated coconut oil and massage back and apply pressure.


  • Diffuse Lavender to create calm and peacefulness in the delivery room.

Energy Boost

  • Inhale or diffuse Peppermint with Wild Orange.

Labor Pains

  • Add Lavender and/or Clary Sage with 2 tablespoons of bath salts and soak in a bath.

Perineal Tearing

  • Mix 5 drops of Clary Sage and 2 drops of Geranium with 2 Tbs of fractionated coconut oil and massage hourly to the perineal area.

Speed Up/Induce Labor

  • Put a drop of Clary Sage on your ankle reflex points and diffuse along with Myrrh during labor. (Clary Sage is also uterine tonic so shouldn’t be used until you are due).



  • Put 1 to 2 drops of Cypress, Geranium, Clary Sage, and Helichrysum with fractionated coconut oil and apply when you use the restroom.

Perineal Healing

  • Add 2 drops of Cypress and 2 drops of Lavender to warm sitz bath and soak for 10-15 min up to 3 times a day.

Postpartum Contractions

  • 2 drops Lavender, 2 drops Frankincense with fractionated coconut oil, and rub on tummy to help with discomfort and have a calming effect.

 Postpartum Depression

  • Diffuse 5-7 drops of Lemon, Wild Orange, Citrus Bliss, Clary Sage, or Bergamot.
  • Make a mix of Wild Orange, Geranium, and/or Frankincense (6 drops total) with 1 Tbs of fractionated coconut oil for massage in your neck, shoulders, and feet and repeat up to 3 times a day.

You will find warnings everywhere about which oils you should and should not use during pregnancy. These previously were very valid concerns because of the impurities that were so prevalent in the oils available and the threat that they posed to a developing fetus. But [with the purity of oils that are now available] it is no longer an issue.

He has also given these points of advice:

  • Stay away from Clary Sage if you were threatening or had a tendency to early labor.
  • Pay attention to your body on dosages as you may need more oil because of increased weight or less oil because your body was at a place of heightened sensitivity.
  • Peppermint used during the latter part of pregnancy or after childbirth can limit milk production in some mothers.
  • Ylang Ylang with Clary Sage may be used during childbirth and to stimulate uterine contractions. Ylang Ylang is very powerful and only a very small amount is needed.

Be cautious about using essential oils during pregnancy, especially during the first trimester. Even oils that are generally safe during this time may be too stimulating for women who are prone to miscarriage.

The following partial list of essential oils gives the prevailing wisdom in years past on how essential oils may be used during pregnancy (please be aware that some are very sensitive and may experience a reaction to the mildest of oils and a skin test using fractionated coconut oil should be used):

  • Those oils ok to use:  Bergamot, Coriander, Frankincense, Geranium, Grapefruit, Lavender, Lemon, Sandalwood, Wild Orange, Ylang Ylang
  • Oils that for some would be better used with a carrier oil or diluted in other ways:  Clove, Cypress, Eucalyptus, Ginger, Helichrysum, Lemongrass, Marjoram, Melaleuca, Myrrh, Oregano, Peppermint, Roman Chamomile.
  • Consult a physician before using these oils:  Basil, Cassia, Cinnamon bark, Clary Sage, Rosemary, Thyme, Vetiver, Wintergreen, White Fir.
  • Additionally, it is noted that Peppermint used during the latter part of pregnancy or after childbirth can limit milk production in some mothers.
