Coaching is a future-focused session with the aim of helping you determine and achieve your goals. By examining what is going on in your life right now we can discover what your obstacles or challenges are and co-design a course of action to make your goals, ambitions and dreams a reality.
How you pick your coach is just as important is how you pick your hair dresser, doctor or dentist. You future is worth the best so here are some common mistakes I see people making when picking their coach.
And so let’s take a look at the 7 Fatal Mistakes people make when choosing a Coach:
1. YOUR COACH ISN’T QUALIFIED
Let me reveal a secret to you, the Coaching Industry is NOT regulated. That’s right anyone can call themselves a coach and charge people for advice. There are many dabblers with little qualification and experience – they do a 6 week course, read one book and all of a sudden think they can support you to achieve your dreams! Your coach should not be teaching you from theory, their effectiveness is a result of training, experience and being coached themselves.
Here are tips to find a coach who is a highly trained and experienced professional. Make sure you work with someone who has invested time, effort and money into creating a life and business specifically designed to help YOU. Take time to interview your coach, ask about their education and experience, and most importantly do they have a coach? Yes that’s right! If your coach doesn’t have a coach, RUN!
When you are looking for a Coach, look for someone with values and is passionate about Coaching. This is evident in the fact that they too work with a Coach themselves and are always seeking to improve what they can offer to you. Their working with a Coach within their own lives is also a sign that they are probably not going to be triggered by YOUR life, and can, therefore, remain objective in helping you to overcome them.
You want a coach who is supporting you to achieve your dreams – so work with someone who can offer you the best possible skills, strategies and experience that you deserve (and you deserve a lot, by the way).
2. YOU THINK YOU NEED TO BE READY
We all want something but for most of us something is holding us back from taking action or creating our vision. The role of a coach is to help you get clear on what is important to you, what you want and how you can breakthrough your fear, insecurities, patterns and procrastinating. All you have to know is that you want it!
3. YOU THINK YOUR PERSONAL TRAINER/BEST FRIEND/NUTRITIONIST CAN COACH YOU
This is one of our personal favorites. When your toilet is clogged you aren’t going to ask the electrician to fix it, are you? So why would you ask, or even expect, your personal trainer, nutritionist or therapist to help you achieve you determine and achieve your goals? A coach is a coach first, and everything else second.
Your friends are cool, right? That’s why you’re friends with them. But let’s take a quick reality check. You are the product of the five people you spend the most time with. This is a fact! Unless you’re friends with Tony Robbins, Gary Vaynerchuk, Mel Robbins, and Deepak Chopra, then the people you surround yourself with are probably going to have similar understandings on your issues as what you do.
Even if they ARE an experienced Coach, as your friend they are not able to push you and challenge you as deeply as someone that is removed from your situation. Their advice is often going to serve their needs too and even if they are altruistic in their approach to you and your issues, they are probably not going to have the necessary abilities to guide you through an up leveling process to your most empowered life.
4. YOU FORGET YOUR PICKING SOMEONE TO BE ON YOUR TEAM
Working with a coach is like asking something to be on your team and play on the same side as you. A coach is your cheerleader and wing man all wrapped up in one! Your coach wants you to WIN and since they only ever have your best interests at heart a coach WILL see through all your excuses and limiting beliefs. And call you on it! A coach will never judge you for your past, present or future desires.
Working with a coach is a fun and exciting journey! Yes, there will be challenges but if you have picked the right person for your team you will never have to to face those challenges alone.
5. YOU THINK A COACH WILL NEVER GET HOW YOU FEEL
I have learned that most coaches start coaching because they have a past and they want to help people who have faced similar challenges. Make sure they are honest about their journey (and that you are honest about yours) and that they understand what it’s like to feel how you feel.
6. YOU BELIEVE VALUE AND PERFORMANCE ARE THE SAME
Often seeing a coach is a last stitch effort to move forward and reach your goals. You may have gone to a therapist, psychologist or counselor, read every book you could find and yet none of it has worked. And then when you contact a coach you are are surprised the prices are the same, or more! Coaches work extremely hard to create a plan of action that will help you achieve your goals and vision. An exceptional coach is probably also running her own business. There is a time and place in life for all caring professions and the work of each is more valuable then words can describe. But this is your life we are talking about so don’t be afraid to invest in it!
Cost also doesn’t mean performance, higher prices doesn’t mean value and lower prices don’t indicate value and that the coach cares more. So how do you pick the right price? The truth is YOU DON’T, choose your coach based on their qualifications and experience, your connection with them and your intuition. When that quiet little voice within tells you that something is amiss, do yourself a favor and LISTEN TO IT! Although this will tie into the point regarding authenticity, your subconscious mind is picking up FAR more information than you are being shown on a conscious level. If you became consciously aware of everything your subconscious mind gathered, you would be insane within 10 minutes. BUT, when your subconscious picks up on an inconsistency in something, it will trigger a silent alarm within you. That is the voice of your intuition.
7. YOU THINK YOU AREN’T WORTH IT
When you pick a life coach you are picking someone that will help to transform your life. There is nothing wrong with fear, doubt or insecurity but always remember your happiness is worth more then your fear. You are worth it. You can find meaning and purpose in your life because you are here for a reason. I believe in your strength, power and potential for success. And I promise, if you make a commitment to work on your happiness, confidence or success you will find it.
