Knowing when it is time to let go

Knowing how and when to let go is one of the hardest things. Our emotions are clouds above us, making it harder to see clearly. This can leave us confused and feeling that it is too hard.

“The truth is unless you let go unless you forgive yourself, unless you forgive the situation, unless you realize that the situation is over, you cannot move forward.” – Steve Maraboli.

So how do you know there is something to let go of?

Signs that there is something to let go

There is a conflict with your values

Our values are a reflection of our experiences and beliefs. They are a big part of our identity. When something conflicts with your values, you are unlikely to find a workable resolution in the long term.

You find yourself justifying not letting it go.

When we are justifying keeping something, this is often a sign. Is what you are saying excusing behavior? Is it discounting or diminishing something or someone? Who are you trying to convince, and why?

Your self-expression is diminished.

Do you find it difficult to say what you need and want? When you speak, do you feel acknowledged? Do you feel free to share what is natural for you without repercussions or judgment?

You continue to have your trust broken.

Is there a difference between someone’s word or promise to you and what happens? Has it happened before? Do you find yourself overlooking little things? Can you trust this person with something significant to you?

You find yourself making a lot of sacrifices.

What is this costing you? Are you consistently giving things up that matter to you? What is the impact on your life?

Your worth is discounted or diminished.

Do you have feelings that you are not good enough? That you are under-appreciated or taken for granted?

You are unhappy

If you are being honest with your self are you happy? Do you feel enlivened by what you are up to or who you are with?

You are exhausted, and your well-being is impacted

Our body is a mirror of our emotions. When you face exhausting, random pain, this is a sign that you are holding on to something.
