Yoga Foundations: Philosophy, History, and the Viniyoga Lens
Understand yoga’s roots. Find your own.
This module gives you a practical framework for understanding yoga as a living practice—and we'd love to have you join us. You'll explore the history, philosophy, and principles that inform our approach to yoga philosophy and foundations at The Life of Wellness Institute.
Grounded in Viniyoga and trauma-informed principles, this module reframes yoga philosophy as a set of tools you can use in every class, session, or personal practice. Together, we’ll explore the history of yoga. The koshas give us a foundational framework for understanding human experience and working with needs. The kleshas offer a lens for understanding why people get stuck. And we’ll learn the langhana/brahmana model—a way to make intelligent choices for the people we teach.
What you'll learn
We’ll begin with a question: What is yoga?
Next, we’ll explore the history and evolution of yoga—how it came to be what it is today, and what that means for how we teach. For example, the two paths of the Vedas offer us a framework for understanding both inner and outer practice. The koshas give us a foundational framework for understanding human experience and working with needs. Additionally, the kleshas help us understand the obstacles that keep us stuck.
This matters because traditional yoga philosophy doesn’t always land for people with trauma. A Viniyoga lens brings it back to real people, making it accessible and relevant.
What Makes This Module Different
Most philosophy courses teach you what to think about yoga. This one teaches you how to think through a Viniyoga lens—so you can apply ancient wisdom to real people and real situations.
You’re not memorizing concepts. You’re learning a framework you’ll use in every class, session, or personal practice.
The Be K.I.N.D. Embodied Wisdom Methodology
We’ll introduce the Be K.I.N.D. Embodied Wisdom Methodology—our framework for holding space with skill and care. You’ll also build a foundational understanding of the 8 Limbs, the gunas, the doshas, and the vayus. Once you understand the langhana/brahmana model, you’ll have a lens for making practice choices that serve each person’s unique needs.
This is the foundation of our yoga philosophy and foundations training—the lens through which we understand everything else in our program.
Throughout the module, we’ll learn together. This is a live, cohort-based module, so you’re not just learning from me—we are all learning from each other.

Hi, I'm Melanie
For over thirty years, I’ve been where you are—passionate about yoga’s healing potential but disillusioned by trainings that prioritize perfect poses over people. That’s why I founded the Life of Wellness Institute: to create a different kind of teacher training. Your lived experience matters more than handstands here. Nervous system science trumps rigid alignment cues. Ultimately, you’ll learn to build a career that sustains both your students and yourself.
My approach—honed through three decades as a yoga therapist and trauma educator—is what I call sacred pragmatism. No spiritual bypassing. No toxic positivity. Instead, just proven tools: breathwork adapted for real trauma recovery, movement that respects anatomical diversity, and business strategies that let you teach from integrity instead of burnout.
Over the years, hundreds of teachers have used this framework to carve their own paths—in hospitals, nonprofits, and private practices where their work actually changes lives. Now, I’m sharing every lesson I’ve learned so you can skip years of trial and error and step confidently into your calling.
This philosophy isn’t academic for me. It’s the lens I’ve used for over thirty years to understand people, trauma, and what it means to heal. That’s what I’m sharing with you.
Ultimately, this isn’t just about teaching yoga. It’s about creating spaces where healing happens—and making a living while you do it.
No pressure, just clarity!
