Knowing how and when to let go is one of the hardest things to do. Our emotions act as a cloud above us. Making it harder to see clearly. This can leave us confused and feeling that it is too hard.
“The truth is unless you let go, unless you forgive yourself, unless you forgive the situation, unless you realize that the situation is over, you cannot move forward.” – Steve Maraboli
So how do you know there is something to let go of?
Signs that there is something to let go
There is a conflict with your personal values
Our personal values are a reflection of our experiences and beliefs. They are a big part of our identity. When something is in conflict with your values you are very unlikely to find a resolution that is workable in the long term.
You find yourself justifying not letting it go
When we are justifying keeping something this is often a sign. Is what you are saying excusing behavior? Is it discounting or diminishing something or someone? Who are you trying to convince, and why?
Your self-expression is diminished
Do you find that it is difficult to say what you need and want? When you speak do you feel acknowledge? Do you feel free to share what is real for you without repercussions and, or judgment?
You continue to have your trust broken
Is there a difference between someone’s word or promise to you and what actually happens? Has it happened before? Do you find yourself overlooking little things? Can you really trust this person with something very important to you?
You find yourself making a lot of sacrifices
What is this costing you? Are you consistently giving things up that matter to you? What is the impact on your life?
Your worth is discounted or diminished
Are you having feelings that you are not good enough? That you are under-appreciated or taking for granted?
You are unhappy
If you are being really honest with your self are you happy? Do you feel enlivened with what you are up to, or who you are with?
You are exhausted and your well-being is impacted
Our body is a mirror for our emotions. When you find yourself facing exhausting, random pain this is a sign that you are holding on to something.
